I rushed to get away from the pain of that conversation. The next day a colleague sat listening to me tell the story of my pain, helping me hear myself and a way forward. I wished that this conversation wouldn’t end. It took me a while to understand the difference between the two encounters. It was listening. Listening transforms relationships, individuals, and situations. Coaches embrace this kind of deep listening. Listening shows up in work, as well as friendship. Saint John Vianney demonstrated the power of listening through his life’s struggles and rejections, shared Mary Luti in this devotional. Vianney, outshining his self-doubts and frustrations through the French revolution, listened for hours to the people of his small community. They found life in his listening. As a coach, I celebrate his valuable example of deep listening. Everyone can learn to listen. Most of us fail to make time to listen deeply, despite our desires to help others and to make a difference in this world. All of us long to be listened to. Few of us feel we have many, if any, people who truly listen to us. Engaging a coach can give you that place of being listened to. Coaching’s deep listening offers space and a mirror that transforms goals, work, and life in ways that we frequently miss out on otherwise. When was the last time you were deeply listened to? How often do you have that opportunity? Imagine having a regular time to be heard. What might happen if you had someone deeply listening, helping you to leap ahead in life? ____________________ 1Mary Luti wrote of Saint John Vianney, his struggles and the power of his life of listening in this UCC devotional on June 24,2021. Sessions will focus on self-care, provide opportunities to share issues being faced, discuss what the role of a leader looks like, dig into biblical connections and more. TIME, DATE & COST The Post-Pandemic Clergy Coaching Group begins at 2 p.m. on September 23 and will last for 8 weekly sessions. This will be a Zoom-based group, and each meeting lasts 90 minutes. And perhaps you could do this all on your own, but you and I often fail to do just that. A coach simply helps create dedicated time for priorities. A coach speeds the journey to success, balance, and the aspirations we hold. Do you have a challenge? Are you feeling stuck somewhere? Would you like to move ahead? Imagine a time when you felt overwhelmed? Now, what would change for you if instead of overwhelmed you felt empowered? You see, a coach puts you in charge of your work, giving you the power in the coaching relationship. If you need to define a new and next thing, then that’s what you do. And if you need to take something off your plate and work smarter then the coach will help you do that. Maybe, you’re seeking to integrate more deep faith and spiritual practice in your work—then that’s the territory. It’s not “One more thing” because you are the one setting the direction. Coaching is about listening to you. It’s about asking thought provoking questions that lead to creative process. Leaders often need some encouragement and room for creativity; coaching is space and place for that. Coaching helps you take your potential and accelerate to accomplishment. Ah, but how do you really know this isn’t just a coach telling you what you want to hear?
